Local context
Oxford’s height safety estate is shaped by three quite different building portfolios that coexist in close geographic proximity. The collegiate estate of the University of Oxford comprises 38 colleges and a number of permanent private halls, with building stock spanning from the 13th century to current-day new build. Any retrofit installation against historic college buildings must work with conservation officers and respect the heritage of facades and parapets that are often of national architectural significance. The Headington medical and research quarter, including the Churchill Hospital, the John Radcliffe Hospital, and the surrounding NHS and Oxford University research estates, represents one of the most concentrated medical research sites in Europe with very high access frequency for plant and laboratory roofs. The science parks at Begbroke (north of the city), Milton Park (south), and Harwell Campus (in South Oxfordshire) add a third category of large-footprint research and commercial buildings.
Oxford Brookes University adds a further significant estate, and the Westgate retail development and central commercial area bring city centre new build. Engineers cover Oxford from the London office, with travel along the M40 keeping response times short.
