What it is
A roof walkway is a defined, designated route across a roof providing three functions at once: a slip-resistant surface in any weather, load distribution across fragile or vulnerable roof coverings, and clear visual demarcation between safe access routes and restricted areas. They are installed to BS EN ISO 14122-2 for walkways, working platforms, and stairways.
The most common configurations are extruded aluminium plank systems and anti-slip composite walkway systems. Aluminium is durable and lightweight; composite anti-slip walkways are particularly effective on metal-sheet roofs and membrane roofs where the walkway material must not damage the surface beneath. Both configurations can be installed with integrated handrails, guardrails, or as plain walkways depending on the proximity to fall edges.
Walkways are particularly important where a roof has fragile elements (rooflights, skylights, insulation panels), where the roof has multiple level changes, or where maintenance access is regular and a defined route is essential for both safety and operational efficiency.
When it applies
- On roofs with fragile rooflights or skylights, to route access around the hazard
- On roofs with regular maintenance access where a defined route is required
- Where load distribution is needed on a vulnerable roof covering
- As part of a wider fall protection installation alongside guardrails or mansafe systems
- For new build commercial and industrial buildings
The process
- Site survey. Engineer attends and assesses the roof, access requirements, and existing systems.
- Route design. Walkway route specified with attention to fragile areas and fall edges.
- Specification. Aluminium or anti-slip composite specified per use case, with handrail or guardrail as required.
- Quotation. Fixed-price covering design, supply, and installation.
- Installation. Carried out by our own engineers without damage to the underlying roof.
What you receive
- Installation certificate to BS EN ISO 14122-2
- Annotated roof plan showing the walkway route
- Specification document covering product, fixing, and method
- Photographic record of installation
