Local context
Brighton’s building stock is unusually concentrated in Victorian and Edwardian seaside hotels and commercial buildings, many of which sit within the city’s substantial conservation areas around the seafront, Old Town, and the Lanes. Retrofitting height safety to these buildings requires particular attention to the heritage character of the parapets and the brick or stucco facades. The Royal Pavilion and surrounding cultural quarter add an additional heritage dimension. The two universities (University of Brighton, University of Sussex at Falmer) operate substantial campuses including laboratory and academic buildings. The growing tech and creative sector along the seafront and in the New England Quarter has brought current-standard new build into the city’s height safety estate.
The marine context of the city, including the Brighton Marina developments and the seafront infrastructure, adds particular weathering considerations to any anchor or guardrail installation, where salt air corrosion is significantly faster than at inland sites. Engineers cover Brighton from the London office.
