The brief
Cardiff International Pool operates as one of the busiest aquatic facilities in South Wales and carries a roof estate that combines large-span steel structure, extensive rooflights, and a complex perimeter geometry around the pool hall and surrounding plant areas. The facility’s management team required a full fall protection compliance assessment, with a clear remediation programme for any items identified as non-compliant.
The brief specifically called for a single contractor capable of carrying out the inspection, scoping the remediation, and completing the installation work, rather than the operator having to coordinate between an inspection company and a separate installer.
What we did
Our engineers carried out a full roof survey across the main pool hall and the surrounding plant areas, inspecting the perimeter guardrail provision against BS EN ISO 14122-3 and BS 6180, the rooflight non-fragility status against ACR (M) 001:2019 and HSE HSG33, and the existing mansafe cable lines against BS EN 795 Type C and BS 7883:2019.
The survey identified several rooflights without confirmed non-fragility status and a number of guardrail runs that required either repair or replacement. We specified rigid steel mesh skylight guards for the rooflights and an extruded aluminium walkway system to route maintenance access around the fragile areas. Remediation guardrail sections were quoted alongside the new installation work and delivered as a single coordinated programme.
The outcome
Cardiff International Pool received a single coordinated audit pack covering both the inspection findings and the new installation certification. Each protected rooflight, walkway run, and remediated guardrail section was documented with photographic evidence, a current-standard certificate, and inclusion in the next annual compliance check at no additional survey cost.
The facility now operates under a structured 12-month recertification cycle, with the next annual visit scheduled and the documentation filed both digitally and physically in the client’s H&S system.
